Eating Together: Pot Luck Lunch - Sunday, October 2
Why is it that sharing a meal with family so richly transcends simply meeting our dietary needs? There is something about gathering together to partake in food made by the hands of people who love you to show us in a very basic and primal way that He is among us. As we intentionally focus in October on the abundance in our lives, it is right for us each to bring our favorite family dish and experience the transformation of the one dish to a feast of physical and spiritual overflow. Therefore, on Sunday, October 2 immediately following the 11:00 service we will share a traditional potluck lunch in the gym. Please note the church will provide meat.
Worshiping Together
Each service in the month of October will be centered around the 23rd Psalm and will conclude with the congregational singing of the Doxology to the Lasst Uns Erfreuen (All Creatures of Our God and King) tune. Each service will also include the Gloria Patri during the service.
October 2 Worship: Matthew 14: 13-21 My Cup Overflows: Multiplication. This Lord’s Supper service will begin with the Sanctuary Choir singing Warren Angell’s This Is the Day the Lord Has Made. As the Lord’s Supper is being observed, the Sanctuary Choir will offer F. Melius Christiansen’s classic setting of Lamb of God. Agape, South Main’s Women’s ensemble, will sing Andrea Ramsey’s Psalm of Hope, and a setting of Psalm 23.
October 9 Worship: Matthew 6: 25-33 My Cup Overflows: Freedom from Worry. Included with other worship music in this service will be David Danner’s The Peace of God. Taken from Matthew 6:25-29, this anthem will be accompanied by various instruments.
October 16 Worship: Matthew13: 31-33 My Cup Overflows: It's Alright to be Little Bitty. Today’s message and scripture will be enhanced with the music of Cindy Berry, Majestic Holy One, presented by the Sanctuary Choir and instrumentalists.
October 23 Worship: Luke 5: 1-11 My Cup Overflows: Fishers of Folk. This is Children’s Day! We will combine for worship at 11:00 a.m. It will be crowded and it will be worth it. The Kindergarten Choir will sing our call to worship. The Older Children will sing Allen Pote’s The Lord Is My Shepherd. We will hear our children’s handbells and handchimes.
October 30 Worship: Luke 19: 1-9 My Cup Overflows: An Attitude of Gratitude. Concluding the month, the combined Joyful Sound and Revelation Youth Choirs will sing Stan Pethel’s Shout for Joy as well as I Have Decided to Follow Jesus. The latter is arranged for cello (to be played by Rebecca Moore) choir and piano. Maranatha, the auditioned ensemble taken from the youth choirs, will sing for the first time for both worship services.
October 30 6:00 PM John Rutter’s beautiful Mass of the Children. The Sanctuary Choir will be joined by Steve Roddy and the famous Houston Children’s Choir, organ and orchestra. The traditional mass text (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Benedictus, and Agnus Dei) are here joined by texts by Thomas Ken (1637-1711) in “Awake, My Soul” and the Doxology as well as William Blake’s (1757-1827) “Little Lamb, Who Made Thee”. The composer has added texts of his own based on 1) Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) poetry (Lord, open Thou my eyes) 2) St. Patrick’s Breastplate from the 5th century (Christ, be my guide today, my guide tomorrow). All join together for a beautiful and inspiring evening of music.
Sharing Scripture Together
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23: 5-6
In a moment of sincerity and candor, the Psalmist confesses, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." This October, we as the family of God in this place, will join with the Psalmist in practicing the ancient spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. Together we will try to commit Psalm 23: 5-6 to memory. By committing together to gather those sacred words into our heads and hearts, we invite the Scriptures and Spirit into our inner life for an ongoing conversation throughout the day. Let us hear what Christ has to teach us through the words we so dearly treasure deep within our souls.
Other Events:
Kids’ Night Out, Friday October 7
We all become Book Worms for the October Kid’s Night Out! Children will come dressed as their favorite book characters, and we will spend the evening playing silly games, laughing, squirming, and exploring how the most magnificent book ever is the source of our great, big attitude of gratitude. Children from fifth grade through infants should join us from 6:00 - 10:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7, for an evening of great fun while their parents enjoy a lovely evening of adult time.
Senior Adult Retreat at Trinity Pines, October 19-21
Children’s Day, October 23
We join together for a single service at 11:00 on Sunday, October 23 as we are led in worship by the children of South Main. The purity of their hearts and the sweetness of their smiles will surely remind us of the overwhelming joy and love our Father has showered upon each of us.
