Advent Devotional December 13: The Hope of Advent

Therefore, Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who was in labor gives birth and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. Micah 5:3

By Dan Masterson

I was one who lived in hopelessness for many years of my life.

I chose this scripture from Micah for the hope it promised to the Israelites for the future coming of the Messiah. We as New Testament people now have the hope that comes from Christ's humble birth in a manger to His death on the cross.

First, gaining a sense of hope was instrumental to my finding faith. Now the faith I have found continues to give back to me new hope, joy, and love. Advent never meant much to me in my younger years, but as I have grown in many ways here at South Main,

Advent has taken on new meaning for me. My heart is warmed by the Sunday morning Advent services with the display of the four banners of hope, peace, joy, and love. I am inspired by the beautiful choir arrangements and the insightful sermons.

Advent is the time of year when I search for meaningful Christmas cards to send to a growing list of recipients. It is also the time for the Power and Light Sunday School Christmas party. The season of Advent provides opportunities for me to be with my South Main family. This is very meaningful to me for I rarely get to celebrate Christmas with my own relatives in Pennsylvania.

I came to South Main very begrudgingly in February of 2011 only after being "pestered" by a friend to come. When I came, I found a church family ready to welcome me with open arms. It was another fellowship that brought me to hope and faith, but it is South Main that helps me grow in relationship with the Lord and fellow believers.

Heavenly Father, may we radiate the hope of our Savior in all we do. May we carry joy and peace in our interactions with others. May our love for our Savior and fellowmen help us walk as pillars of faith. Amen.
