Music Programs

South Main has a long tradition of making beautiful music, both in worship and for the benefit of the greater community. South Main's choral and children's music education programs extend back more than half a century and draw on some of the finest talent in the Houston area. Between the Sanctuary Choir, vocal and instrumental ensembles, bell choirs, and youth and children's programs, there is a place for everyone to make a "joyful noise"—whatever your age or gifts.

Adult Choir and Ensembles

The Sanctuary Choir of South Main provides music for both morning worship services nearly every Sunday throughout the year. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7:30 PM. No audition is necessary. Just join us for rehearsal to get a taste of what it's like to be part of the choir. In addition to weekly services, the Sanctuary Choir also regularly shares its musical gifts with the Houston community and has participated in both national and international tours. Choir members experience a unique path for spiritual growth, encountering theological truths both through the texts that we sing, and through the way we sing them together.

Small Vocal Ensembles

In addition of the Sanctuary Choir, South Main has three vocal ensembles:

  • One Accord, a men's ensemble
  • Agape, a women's ensemble
  • A Chamber Choir of mixed voices

Each group performs an extensive range of styles and genres for worship services and community events. If you have questions, or would like to audition, please contact Carey Cannon.

Adult Instrumental Ensembles

Of course, there is more to music than singing. South Main has two instrumental ensembles that meet on a regular basis.

The South Main Bronze is a handbell choir made up of talented ringers who perform periodically in morning worship. The group also performs around the Houston area, often at hospitals and in-care facilities.

The South Main Brass is an ensemble of brass instruments which plays occasionally in worship services and for special programs throughout the year. The ensemble is open to players with medium to high proficiency. They meet on Wednesday nights in our Westmoreland Chapel to rehearse.

In addition to these ensembles, instrumentalists are sometimes needed for special music, and may be featured in worship. If you're new to South Main and would like to share your musical gifts, please contact Stephen Bedford.

Youth Ensembles

South Main's vocal and bell ensembles for young people extend and deepen the musical education that kids receive in school, and also provide meaningful opportunities to lead in worship. These programs share the goals of the Family Ministry—encouraging kids to celebrate and navigate their way toward an authentic and lasting faith in Christ by experiencing and expressing their faith through music.

There are four ensembles for pre-teens and teens. No auditions are needed—we all share our gifts together.

  • The 527 Tribe vocal choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:45 PM.
  • The 527 Tribe bell choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:15 PM.
  • The Youth vocal choir rehearses on Sundays at 11:25 AM.
  • The Youth bell choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:15 PM.

Children’s Music Ministry

For more than 50 years, South Main's children's music programming has inspired younger kids to praise God with voices and instruments, singing, playing, and developing their unique talents with some of the finest musical teachers in Houston. Every Wednesday evening during the school year, from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM, children in Kindergarten through 7th grade meet in grade-level choirs and bell ensembles.
