South Main International Learning Experience (SMILE)

"When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God." — Leviticus 19:33-34

SMILE is one of South Main's longest-running ministries, and marked its 50th anniversary in 2016. The women and men who make up SMILE demonstrate the compassion and life-changing power of Jesus Christ by serving as teachers, guides, and friends to newly arrived transplants from other countries. SMILE offers internationals in Houston a place for friendship as well as instruction in conversational English and American culture. SMILE volunteers also help with practical instruction in sewing, cooking, and arts and crafts, and help newcomers navigate unfamiliar documents and procedures. There is even a SMILE Chorale which performs several times a year.

SMILE meets on Mondays from 9:30 AM until 12:00 noon during the school year. Childcare for preschoolers is available to SMILE families at no cost. We welcome you and your precious children to our campus for this wonderful opportunity to make friends from around the city and the globe!
